Verification of genome selection effect of size of large-scale pasture in Xinjiang

  • Objective To analyze the efficiency and feasibility of genomic selection in Holstein cows based on dairy herd improvement (DHI) data and genomic genetic evaluation.
Methods A total of 534 Holstein cows with both genomic predicted transmitting ability (GPTA) and phenotypic records from large-scale dairy farms in Xinjiang were selected and grouped by GPTA and DHI data. Groupings were also conducted according to culling reasons, productive life and net merit index (NM). Correlations between GPTA for milk yield, productive life, NM and cow culling rate were analyzed, and the consistency between genomic evaluation and phenotypic performance was compared.
Results Strong correlations were found between GPTA for milk yield and 305 days milk yield, as well as between GPTA for productive life, NM and cow culling rate. Genomic genetic evaluation was consistent with phenotypic data in cow culling decisions.
Conclusion Genomic evaluation of Holstein cows is sufficiently accurate and can be used for early precise selection and scientific breeding and mating of cow populations.
